Honorary Citizen of Kendal percy duff 4
1922-2011

Kendalians will have been saddened to hear of the death on Saturday 17th December of Percy Skipworth Duff, former Kendal Town Treasurer, at the age of 89.  Percy was the successor to the legendary Alfred Wainwright, becoming Treasurer of Kendal Borough Council in 1967.  He became Deputy Treasurer of the new South Lakeland District Council in April 1974 a post he held until retirement in 1982.  He continued as Treasurer of Kendal Town Council for a further 26 years before retiring in 1998 after 60 years of service to the Town.   Percy was the only surviving Honorary Citizen of the Town, of which he was very proud.  He was made an MBE in 1986.  Away from his work environment he was Treasurer to numerous local charities and served for 31 years as Treasurer of the Mayor of Kendal's fund for the Aged and Infirm.  He ws a local historian and very proud of "his" town and along with his late wife Margaret had an extensive photographic collection which formed part of many articles in the Westmorland Gazette.  He was the author of four books on Kendal and was much sought after in giving talks to local societies.

Percy leaves 2 sons, Paul and Michael who are both keen motorcyclists, following in their fathers footsteps.

The Mayor of Kendal, Cllr John Veevers and Kendal Town Council were delighted that on Saturday 30 April 2011 a Freedom Parade in Honour of The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment took place in Kendal, followed by a Thanksgiving Service at Kendal Parish Church.

On 25 October 1947 The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (then The Border Regiment) was granted the Freedom of Kendal.  The Regiment  exercised its right to the Freedom of Kendal on 30 April, which has not been exercised since July 1980, so we are particularly pleased to welcome them again.

The Mayor of Kendal, Cllr John Veevers said “This parade is long overdue and I am looking forward to what is a really good news event for the town of Kendal and the surrounding area.  I hope that as many people as possible can come out and show their support, as well as giving thanks for our local Regiment’s commitment in defending our country.  I am proud that many local lads will be involved and would encourage residents and visitors on the route to fly flags to show encouragement for their efforts.”

Major Michael Brandwood TD, County Secretary, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment said  “It has been over 30 years since the Regiment exercised the Freedom of The Town of Kendal.  It is a great privilege and honour that we have been invited to parade through the town of Kendal once again with Drums Beating, Colours Flying and Bayonets Fixed.  The day will serve to cement Kendal's close links with The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment; links which the Regiment is extremely proud and honoured to enjoy.”

Kendal Parish Church is home to the Border Regiment Chapel and houses the Regiment chapel, and houses the colours of the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment).

Rev Rob Saner-Haigh said “We are very pleased to welcome the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment to Kendal Parish Church for this special Service of Thanksgiving. It’s important to us as so many people from our community have longstanding connections with the regiment and its predecessors.”  The Parade will commence at 12.10 through the town of Kendal and be followed by a Thanksgiving Service at Kendal Parish Church at 13.00.  The return Parade will commence at approx 14.15, with the salute taken at Kendal Town Hall.  Members of the public are invited to line the main thoroughfare of Kendal to welcome the Regiment and attend the Thanksgiving Service.  In order to facilitate the Parade there will be rolling road closures between 11.45 and 15.00, although it is anticipated that these will be no more than two periods of 25 minutes.  We would encourage the public and businesses of Kendal to note that there will be disruption and that journeys may take longer than usual.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
