Kendal Town Council is the third tier of Local Government for Kendal. Immediately above the Town Council is South Lakeland District Council and above this is Cumbria County Council.

There are fourteen electoral wards within Kendal and two councillors are elected for each ward. Councillors are usually elected for a term of four years, except where a by-election is held. Town Councillors are unpaid public servants and the 28 councillors of Kendal meet in full Council on the first of each month. These evening meetings are held in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall and are open to the public and the press.

Every year a Mayor is elected by the Councillors.  On 9th June 2010 Cllr John Veevers became the 273rd Mayor of Kendal for 2010/2011.

Councillor John Veevers was born and brought up in Kendal and has lived around the town all of his life.  On leaving school, he trained as a Fitter and Turner at Vickers' Shipyward in Barrow-in-Furness, attending Barrow Technical College and gaining a Mechanical Technician's Certification.  Councillor Veevers was a keen rugby player, being a member of Kendal Rugby Club, as both player and coach, but he also played at Vale of Lune Rugby Club in Lancaster for approximately three years and toured with Otley.  Councillor Veevers became a Town Councillor 5 years ago and has been involved with several committees, including Kendal in Bloom, Highways and Infrastructure and also chaired the Allotments Committee.  During his Mayoral term of office, and with the support of fellow Town Councillors, Councillor Veevers is keen to instil a sense of community pride and encourage more Kendalians to join and support charities and other voluntary groups.  He has chosen Riversiders' Trust as his Mayoral charity.  The Trust provides activities for adults with leanring and physical disabilities.  Councillor Veevers is married to Lynne and they have two daughters.
