ImageKendal Town Council

Kendal Town Council is the third tier of Local Government for Kendal. Immediately above the Town Council is South Lakeland District Council and above this is Cumbria County Council.

There are fourteen electoral wards within Kendal and two councillors are elected for each ward. Councillors are usually elected for a term of four years, except where a by-election is held. Town Councillors are unpaid public servants and the 28 councillors of Kendal meet in full Council on the first of each month.  These evening meetings are held in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall and are open to the public and the press.

Every year a new Mayor is elected.  On 19 May 2011 Cllr Jonathan Brook became the 274th Mayor of Kendal for 2011/2012.

"I have lived and worked in and around Kendal for rmost of my life.  I was educated at Kendal Grammar School and the Lakes School, Windermere.  I studies Applied Biology at Bradford University, before joining Provincial Insurance in Kendal.  I am currently a director of Manna House.  This Kendal based charity works with homeless and vulnerable housed adults.  I am married to Fiona and we have three daughters.  Our family offers respite foster care.  I enjoy the great outdoors and the occasional game of bowls.

I became a town and district councillor in 2006.  On Kendal Town Council I have been a member of Planning Committee since that date and more recently I have been a member of the Mayorality and Management Committees.  I was Chair of South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) from 2008 until 2010.  Since  2006 I have also been a member of the Lakes District National Park Authority.

My chosen charity for the year is Kendal Family Drop-in.  Kendal Family Drop-in provides information and advice on family services, training, support and a range of family activities, and operates from Stricklandgate House.

In my Mayoral year I want to encourage the development and promotion of Kendal as 'The gateway to the lakes'.  Kendal has a tremendous history and its people have shown great strength of character over the years.  We have a great tradition of fairs and pageants and I want to encourage the Torchlight Carnival, Mintfest, The Kendal Mountain Festival and the Tour of Britain.

I want to encourage Kendal Town Council to work closely with other tiers of local Government, local businesses, the third sector and faith communtities to bring the best for the community and see a revival in the town.  I would love to see Kendal flourish again as a town of signficance and influence."

For more information on the Mayoralty see Kendal Mayoralty page.

During the year there are a number of Civic Occasions within Kendal.
These are:-

Mayor Making - held on the third Thursday in May.

Mayor’s Sunday – held on the first Sunday in July.

Remembrance Sunday – held on the second Sunday in November.

In addition there is usually a Civic Reception held in the Town Hall on the evening of Kendal Torchlight Carnival, where distinguished guests are received and dignitaries from our Twinned Towns, Rinteln and Killarney, are welcomed.
