Kendal

ImageKendal, is an historic market town, situated in the valley on the banks of the River Kent just 8 miles from Morecambe Bay and stands at the entrance to one of the most beautiful parts of the country – the English Lakes District.

Kendal is also within 20 minutes drive to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, making it a perfect base for walkers and sightseers alike.

The town has a high number of quality hotels, as well as many guest houses and B&Bs.

The town’s unique blend of history, culture and shopping make it a very popular destination for visitors. There are attractions for all ages, fascinating museum, modern and historic art and a variety of leisure facilities including the sports centre and a theatre complex. For shoppers there is a pleasant mix of High Street names, Shopping Centres, a Factory Outlet, Specialty Shops and a Traditional Market.

Many of the buildings in Kendal are Victorian and constructed in local limestone (giving rise to the epithet “the Auld Grey Town”), but there are much older buildings, particularly the “Yards” for which the town is justifiably famous. There are even the remains of a Norman Castle and the town’s history stretches back even further.
(for more details see Kendal’s History page).

Kendal is the main administrative town for local government and hosts the offices of South Lakeland District Council as well as area offices for Cumbria County Council.
