Waiting list
The demand for allotments in Kendal is still high with a current waiting list of 136 people @ 29 July. The average waiting time is currently 18 months to 2 years depending on the site. Some sites have a greater turnaround that others. Larger plots have been split to create smaller managable plots when they become vacant and this has increased the number of plots at Underley Road, Rinkfield, Castle Haggs and Castle Haggs Ext.
Transition South Lakes Allotments Working Group met to explore ideas on obtaining more allotment land in and around the Kendal area. Click here to read the minutes of the meeting, held on 1 October 2009.
A mailing consultation was carried out to all the people on the waiting list requesting to confirm interest in an allotment and identify up to 3 prefered allotment sites they wish to work. Those who did not return the forms are assumed they no longer wish to work an allotment and will be taken of the waiting list. 44% returned the forms, therefore reducing the number of people waiting from 250+ to 128.
Of course we have new requests daily but timescales for waiting should be significantly reduced now. Click here to print an allotment request form and a site map showing where the sites are situated.
Current Tennants
Letters are sent to tenants who are not working their plots to ask them to take steps to tidy up and use the plot otherwise they are in breach of the tenancy agreement and notice will be given to terminate the plot. Any tennants who are struggling to work the allotment plots could think about splitting their plots in half resulting in a more manageable size to maintain and continue to enjoy the benefits of working an alloment. Is any allotment holders willing to share an allotment or allow someone waiting for a plot to help and gain experience in allotmenteering? Any tennant wishing to do this, please contact the office. Rent 2010 Allotments rent received from tennants helps to cover the cost of the administration, the handyman, water rates, rent, fencing, pest control and tree cutting. The 2010 rental costs are £32 per annum for the small plots, £40 per annum for medium size plots and £48 per annum for the large plots,
