Kendal Town Council

Kendal in Bloom

Each year the Kendal in Bloom Committee encourages communities, businesses and groups to take part in making Kendal a nicer place to live and work. The competition has three elements, community initiative, a school’s challenge and an allotments competition.

Celebrating the Centenary of the end of World War One

This year, Kendal Town Council are honouring the centenary of the end of World War 1 (WW1). by using the colours red, white and blue for our civic planting scheme. The badge bed at the Parish Church will be in the shape of the RAF logo (RAF are also celebrating their 100 year anniversary) and we have special lamppost banners on Highgate during the summer months. We would  like to encourage community groups, home owners, organisations, like-minded people and businesses to get involved and make a difference to the local area.  With this in mind, Kendal in Bloom (KIB) would like to see this theme followed through each category in the annual competition.  There are four competition categories:

  • School’s/Young People’s Challenge
  • Allotments
  • Community
  • Business

We would like to encourage you to create a space, planter or bed that is dedicated to WW1 and the celebration of peace. Some ideas could be:

  • creating your own peace garden/area
  • using poppies, in a planter, basket, bed etc
  • using the colours red, white and blue in a blue planting scheme
  • growing vegetables with heritage seeds from WW1 era

This year is unique and we have no strict criteria, we would like to encourage you to be creative, use your imagination and have fun!!

All entries will be viewed by members of the KIB committee.  If you entry has reached its peak before the committee visit, we are happy to accept photographic evidence.

There will be an evening of celebration for all entries on 20th September 2018

If you would like to register to take part, please email your contact details and the category you want to enter to Janine Holt at

Good Luck!
