Kendal 20 MPH Scheme Approval Welcomed by Town Council

Kendal Town Council has welcomed the approval of 20mph speed limit proposals for Kendal, following a decision taken at a meeting of Westmorland and Furness Council’s South Lakeland Locality Board this week.

The decision marks the final stage of a long-running process of scheme development, consultation and assessment. Kendal is one of several communities across South Lakeland and the wider Westmorland and Furness area where 20mph schemes will now be implemented.

Kendal Town Council would like to thank Westmorland and Furness Council officers for their work over several years in developing, assessing and bringing forward locally appropriate and deliverable schemes. The schemes were developed using available data, informed by consultation and local engagement, and considered for progression where support was identified. Where communities raised concerns or chose not to proceed, those views were taken into account.

Cllr Eamonn Hennessy, Chair of Kendal Town Council’s Environment Committee, said:

This decision reflects a careful, evidence-led approach. We have listened to communities, followed the data, and worked closely with officers to bring forward schemes that are appropriate for each place. Where there has been support, we have proceeded — and where there hasn’t, we have listened.

He added:

It’s important to acknowledge that there are different views on 20mph limits. Some residents remain unconvinced, while others would have liked us to go further and faster. Both perspectives are valid, but this is still a significant step, and one that reflects many years of discussion and engagement.

Kendal’s scheme sits within a wider programme across Westmorland and Furness. It reflects a phased approach, with schemes brought forward, implemented and reviewed over time, and with further communities to be considered over the coming year.

Kendal Town Council welcomes the move to implementation and notes that the Council considers 20mph schemes to have the potential to contribute to safer streets, cleaner environments and friendlier places, as part of wider efforts to improve road safety and the quality of life in local communities.
